Courtney Miller has a diverse practice that focuses on legal ethics and professional responsibility and includes general trial litigation, appellate litigation, and government investigations.
She represents lawyers and law firms in attorney discipline matters and related civil litigation, including before bar committees and in disciplinary proceedings, state and federal trial courts, state and federal appellate courts, and immigration court. She regularly advises clients on a wide range of legal ethics issues, including bar complaints, misconduct, criminal conduct, fee and partner disputes, unauthorized practice of law, D.C. Bar admissions, and character and fitness evaluations.
Courtney is experienced in all phases of litigation, from pre-trial strategy through appeal. She also assists with government investigations in the telecommunications space.
Courtney serves as adjunct faculty at Georgetown University Law Center, teaching Professional Responsibility to law students. Before entering private practice, Courtney clerked for the Honorable Catharine F. Easterly of the D.C. Court of Appeals and served as a Law & Policy Fellow at the National LGBTQ Task Force.

Representative Experience
- Navigated several unauthorized practice of law (UPL) inquiries by the UPL Committee and Committee on Admissions to successful agreement.
- Obtained dismissals of a variety of bar complaints alleging a wide array of disciplinary infractions.
- Secured voluntary dismissal of years-long civil litigation based on client’s former employer’s allegations of UPL and other misconduct.
- Secured dismissals with prejudice of charges against several defendants in the “J20 Inauguration Day” protest cases.
- Obtained dismissal of baseless child abuse allegations by successfully moving for judgment as a matter of law after the Department of Social Services presented its case.
- Filed an amicus brief arguing that religious employer’s denial of health benefits to gay employee’s same-sex spouse was discrimination based on sexual orientation.
- Successfully defended video-sharing platform on appeal by obtaining a ruling that barred appellant’s defamation and negligence claims.

- Received UVA Law School Alumni Association’s Best Note Award and second place nationally in the Religious Liberty Student Writing Competition for her note “Spiritual But Not Religious”: Rethinking the Legal Definition of Religion (2016)
