HWG LLP attorney Grace H. Wynn presented “A Lawyer’s Ethical Duties to Understand Metadata, Digital Evidence in the Cloud, Secure Client Data, and More” on December 10 at a D.C. Bar CLE program.
The program offered a practical overview of how emerging technology is transforming the legal field and explained why staying technologically proficient has become an ethical responsibility for attorneys, not merely an academic requirement.

Grace walked through key issues lawyers face in the digital age, including:

  • The potential and limitations of generative AI in legal work
  • Metadata risks and safeguards
  • Electronically stored information (ESI) and discovery challenges
  • Social media implications for evidence, communication, and client representation
  • Cloud storage and confidentiality considerations

To illustrate these concepts, Grace examined practical scenarios that demonstrated not only the technologies lawyers must understand but also the depth of knowledge required to competently and ethically serve clients in an increasingly digital legal environment.

Grace focuses her practice on legal ethics and professional responsibility and teaches “Ethics and the Law of Lawyering” at Duke University Law School.
