On March 28, 2018, HWG attorney Shiva Goel presented Data and Connected Cars: Balancing Risks and Benefits at a KnowledgdeNet event hosted by the International Association of Privacy Professionals in Austin, TX.  During the presentation, Shiva described the connectivity-driven applications used on the road today and the communications technologies that commonly support them.  He also discussed the categories of data generated by connected vehicles, and their current and potential commercial and public safety uses.  After exploring the legal and policy concerns raised by the retention, sharing, and sale of vehicle data, Shiva provided an update on recent regulatory and legislative initiatives seeking to address the issue.  The presentation ended with a look at what lies ahead, focusing on the potential impact on data privacy regulation of the transportation industry’s movement towards a Mobility-as-a-Service delivery model.
